Turns your deck measurements and material choices into a clean order sheet.
Before and after
Material Order Sheet
Job: Gerald Lindsey deck
Site: 7267 Hazelbank St, Dunbank
Builder: Highbank Decks
Crew lead: Hector Mathis
Supplier: Ironbank Supply
Delivery: Driveway. Gwen Lynch receives, 206-555-0116.
Deck: 16 ft x 12 ft, ground level to 30 in up. No railing, no stairs.
Phase 1: Framing (starts Monday, June 9)
Waste used: 10 percent
| Item | Needed | Waste | Order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x8 pressure treated, 16 ft, joists | 9 | 10 percent (0.9) | 10 |
| 2x8 pressure treated, 16 ft, rim boards | 2 | 10 percent (0.2) | 3 |
| 2x8 pressure treated, 12 ft, rim boards | 2 | 10 percent (0.2) | 3 |
Math notes: Raw counts are the owner's own counts. Each line is rounded up to whole boards. The two 16 ft lines are both 16 ft boards, so if you want to order them together, joists and rim boards combined are 11 needed, and 10 percent of 11 is 1.1, which rounds up to 13 boards in total. Separate lines give 13 as well (10 + 3).
Phase 2: Decking (starts Monday, June 16)
Waste used: 15 percent
Deck width is 12 ft, which is 144 in. At 5.5 in coverage per board with no gap, one row of boards across the 12 ft width needs 144 divided by 5.5, which is 26.18, so 27 boards.
Boards run the 16 ft length, so one 16 ft board covers one row.
| Item | Needed | Waste | Order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5/4 x 6 composite, Tigerwood, 16 ft | 27 | 15 percent (4.05) | 32 |
Math notes: 27 plus 4.05 is 31.05, rounded up to 32.
Delivery timing
Count back from each start date by the supplier lead time plus 1 buffer day.
| Phase | Start | Delivery date | Order by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framing lumber (2 days lead) | Mon, June 9 | Sun, June 8 | Fri, June 6 |
| Composite decking (5 days lead) | Mon, June 16 | Sun, June 15 | Tue, June 10 |
Flags:
- Both delivery dates fall on a Sunday, one buffer day before each start date. Confirm Ironbank Supply can deliver on a Sunday, or choose an earlier delivery day.
- Composite is the long lead line. Lead time is 5 days per Ironbank Supply.
- Lumber lead time is counted in days as given. Confirm with Ironbank Supply whether that means business days.
Questions for the owner
- Did you want the two 16 ft rim boards ordered as part of the 16 ft joist count or listed separately? Both give 13 total boards, so this only affects how the line reads.
- Should the 15 percent waste also cover the picture frame border you mentioned, or is the border not part of this job?
- Are the 2 days lumber lead time and 5 days composite lead time business days or calendar days?
- Both delivery dates land on a Sunday (June 8 and June 15). Do you want a different delivery day, given Gwen Lynch will be home to receive it? An earlier delivery day means an earlier order-by date.
- No footing, hardware, fastener, or fascia lines were given. Do you want those added? Send quantities or sizes and we will add them.
- Please confirm joist spacing, footing requirements, and permit needs with the local building department or a licensed engineer.
What it does
Turns your deck measurements and material choices into a clean order sheet. It adds a waste amount to each line, rounds up to the lengths and counts you can actually buy, and sets order and delivery dates so materials are on site when the crew needs them.
Use it when: Use when a deck builder needs to turn a deck plan, measurements, or a rough takeoff into a material order sheet with waste factor and delivery timing, such as: make the material list, build the order sheet, what do I need to order for this deck, or figure out the lumber order.
