Lure and Bait Recommendation by Species, Water and Season
Turns a customer's trip details and the shop's own knowledge into a clear, ready-to-use recommendation: what to buy, how to fish it, and what backup to bring.
Before and after
Dale, here's what we'd put together for you and your 10 year old at Lake Harmon this Saturday.
Your trip: bass, plus anything else that bites, from the dock and bank, late May, stained water after this week's rain.
Our top pick: chartreuse/white spinnerbait, 3/8 oz ($4.99)
We like bright, flashy colors when the water is stained because fish can find them more easily. Cast it along the bank or past the end of the dock and reel it in at a steady, medium speed. If you feel a bump, keep reeling.
Backups
- Nightcrawlers under a bobber (best for your kid): hook a worm on a #6 hook, add a split shot about a foot above it, and set the bobber so the worm hangs a few feet down near the dock. Bobbers are easy for kids to watch, and this setup can catch bass and other fish.
- Green pumpkin 4 in worm, rigged on a 1/0 offset hook: cast it near dock posts and let it sink slowly. Switch to this if the spinnerbait is not getting bites.
Gear check: your spincast combo with 10 lb mono is a fine match for the spinnerbait and the bobber setup. The worm on an offset hook will work, though you will need to keep the line tight to feel bites.
Shopping list
- Chartreuse/white spinnerbait 3/8 oz: $4.99
- Nightcrawlers cup: $4.25
- #6 live bait hooks, 10 pack: $2.49
- Split shot assortment: $3.19
- Small red bobbers, 3 pack: $2.29
- Green pumpkin 4 in worms: $5.49
- 1/0 offset worm hooks, 5 pack: $3.29
Total: $25.99
That leaves room under your $40 budget. If you want one more lure, the small bluegill-color crankbait is $7.99, which would bring the total to $33.98.
Before you go: please check the fishing license requirements, size and bag limits, and any bait rules for Lake Harmon with your state or local wildlife agency. If you plan to release fish, we suggest pinching down the barb on your hooks and handling the fish gently and quickly. Have a great day on the water.
What it does
Turns a customer's trip details and the shop's own knowledge into a clear, ready-to-use recommendation: what to buy, how to fish it, and what backup to bring. Works for a quick counter question or a full trip kit.
Use it when: Use when a fishing tackle shop needs to recommend lures, baits, rigs and colors for a customer based on target species, water type and season, such as "what should I tell this guy to use for bass," "what's biting right now," "build a kit for a trip," or "write up a recommendation for the customer."
