Pattern and Layout to Extra Material Estimate
Takes the rooms, the product, and the pattern the customer wants, then works out how much material to order and how much of that is extra because of the pattern.
Before and after
Hi Amir,
Here is the material estimate for your floor at 640 Clayshire St, Sandglen, using Quillmark Harbor 7 inch click vinyl plank in Smoked Chestnut.
Areas
- Living room, herringbone: 18 ft x 14 ft = 252 sq ft. With our 20% pattern allowance, 252 x 1.20 = 302.4 sq ft to order.
- Hallway, straight lay: 12 ft x 4 ft = 48 sq ft. With our 10% allowance, 48 x 1.10 = 52.8 sq ft to order.
Total to order: 302.4 + 52.8 = 355.2 sq ft.
Each box covers 23.8 sq ft, so 355.2 / 23.8 = 14.92 boxes. We recommend 15 boxes, which is 357 sq ft. That leaves 1.8 sq ft of extra material.
What the herringbone adds
- If both areas were straight lay, the total would be 300 x 1.10 = 330 sq ft, which is 14 boxes (333.2 sq ft).
- Herringbone adds 25.2 sq ft of material before rounding, which comes to 1 extra box.
- Extra material cost for the pattern: 1 box x $80.92 = $80.92.
Material cost
- 15 boxes x $80.92 = $1,213.80
- Straight lay only: 14 boxes x $80.92 = $1,132.88
This covers material only. If you have questions, call me at 330-555-0102.

Questions for the owner
- What is the labor price for herringbone compared to straight lay?
- Is delivery or sales tax to be added to the material cost?
- Has the box coverage and dye lot been confirmed with the supplier for this product?
- Has the subfloor been checked in both areas?
What it does
Takes the rooms, the product, and the pattern the customer wants, then works out how much material to order and how much of that is extra because of the pattern. Gives a plain comparison against a straight lay so the customer sees what the pattern adds.
Use it when: Use when a flooring business needs to work out how much extra material a pattern or layout choice (herringbone, diagonal, chevron, staggered, straight lay) will take, such as "how much extra for herringbone," "figure the waste for this layout," or "how many boxes do we need for this pattern."
