Matted Coat Assessment and Dematting Fee Explanation
Turns a groomer's notes about a matted coat into a calm, honest explanation for the pet owner.
Before and after
Hi Graham,
Here is what Gregory McLean found when he checked Pickle in at Flinthurst Pet Grooming, and how we got to the price.
What we found
- Behind both ears: bad mats, tight against the skin
- Under both front legs: bad mats
- Over the hindquarters: a large felted patch
- Tail: some matting
- Belly: no matting
The skin under the ear mats looked pink and a little irritated. We can only report what we saw and cannot tell you the cause, so we recommend having your veterinarian take a look at it.
What we recommend
We recommend clipping the matted areas short instead of dematting. Pickle was fidgety and panting when we tried to brush the ear mats, and dematting would have taken over an hour and would have hurt him. Clipping is the gentler choice for him today. You approved the short clip by phone, and that is what we did.
Why matting matters
We recommend taking matting seriously because mats pull on the skin, can hold moisture against it, and brushing them out can be uncomfortable for the dog.
Why there is a dematting fee
Matted areas take extra time and care beyond a normal groom. That extra time is what the fee covers.
Your total
- Base groom: $75
- Extra time for the matted areas: 30 minutes at $20 per 15 minutes = $40
- Total: $115

Questions for the owner
- Do you want to add the shop's written matting policy wording to this message?
- Should we add a rebooking suggestion for Pickle? If so, please tell us what to say.
What it does
Turns a groomer's notes about a matted coat into a calm, honest explanation for the pet owner. It covers what was found, what options the groomer recommends, why the dematting fee applies, and exactly how the fee adds up.
Use it when: Use when a pet groomer needs to assess a matted coat and explain the dematting fee to the pet owner fairly and clearly, such as "explain the matting charge," "write up the dematting fee," or "customer is upset about the matted dog."
