Before and after

BEFORE · what the owner typed
Customer Benny Norris at Owlhollow Hardware wants to fix his back porch steps. Says 3 steps, each tread is 36 inches wide and 11 inches deep, the old treads are rotten so he wants to replace them with pressure treated 2x6 boards, 2 boards per tread. Stringers are fine. Needs to get screws, he has a drill and a circular saw but no speed square. He wants to stain after. Also the railing post on the left wobbles, wants to tighten it. Wearing gloves and glasses is a must, he has none. Aisle map: Aisle 1 lumber, Aisle 2 fasteners, Aisle 3 hand tools, Aisle 4 paint and stain, Aisle 5 safety gear. Shop is at 379 Maplehollow St, Dovefield. Phone 267-555-0144.
AFTER · what the skill produced

Hi Benny, here is your shopping list for replacing the three back porch step treads and tightening the left railing post, grouped by aisle so you can walk the store once.

Aisle 1, Lumber

  • Pressure treated 2x6 boards, 6 boards (3 treads x 2 boards per tread). Each board gets cut to 36 inches wide per tread.

Aisle 2, Fasteners

  • Exterior deck screws, quantity to confirm

Aisle 3, Hand tools

  • Speed square, 1 (you do not own one)

Aisle 4, Paint and stain

  • Exterior wood stain, quantity to confirm
  • Stain brush or pad, 1
  • Drop cloth, 1

Aisle 5, Safety gear

  • Work gloves, 1 pair
  • Safety glasses, 1 pair

Tools you already own: Drill: customer has. Circular saw: customer has.

We recommend

  • Picking up a few extra screws, since it is easy to strip one when driving into pressure treated wood.
  • Having a licensed professional look at the wobbly left railing post. A railing post is a safety and load-bearing item, so we are not listing fasteners or repair steps for it.
  • Confirming any local code rules for stair treads and railings with your local building office.

Stop by the store at 379 Maplehollow St, Dovefield, or call us at 267-555-0144 if you want help finding anything.

Questions for the owner

  • How many screws per tread should we count? The customer did not say the stringer spacing.
  • How many square feet of tread will be stained, so we can work out the stain quantity?
  • What are the prices and stock counts for these items, if we should include them?
