AFTER · what the skill produced

Takeoff: Dorothy Mays, 8547 Fawnleigh St, Ivyford
Prepared by Delia Knapp, Goldleigh Landscaping. Customer phone: 312-555-0136.

Area measurements

  • A. Front bed: 24 ft x 5 ft = 120 sq ft
  • B. Tree ring: 3.14 x 4 x 4 = 50.24 sq ft
  • C. Side strip: 30 ft x 3 ft = 90 sq ft

Plants

  • Area A, Hakone grass 1 gal, 24 in (2 ft) spacing. The bed is 5 ft wide, and the notes do not say how many rows. Counted as one row along the 24 ft length: 24 / 2 = 12 plants. See questions.
  • Add 2 extra plants: 12 + 2 = 14 Hakone grass

Materials by area

  • A. Mulch, 3 in = 0.25 ft: 120 x 0.25 = 30 cu ft, / 27 = 1.11 cu yd. Plus 10 percent: 1.22 cu yd
  • B. Mulch, 3 in: 50.24 x 0.25 = 12.56 cu ft, / 27 = 0.47 cu yd. Plus 10 percent: 0.51 cu yd
  • C. River rock, 2 in (2 / 12 = 0.1667 ft): 90 x 0.1667 = 15 cu ft, / 27 = 0.56 cu yd. Plus 10 percent: 0.61 cu yd
  • C. Fabric: 90 sq ft

Combined order list (rounded up)

  • Hakone grass 1 gal: 14
  • Mulch: 1.22 + 0.51 = 1.73, order 2 cu yd
  • River rock: 0.61, order 1 cu yd
  • Landscape fabric: 90 sq ft
  • Edging: 20 ft needed, order 1 roll (25 ft)

Costs (your prices)

  • Hakone grass: 14 x 14 = 196.00
  • Mulch: 2 x 38 = 76.00
  • River rock: 1 x 62 = 62.00
  • Fabric: 90 x 0.20 = 18.00
  • Edging: 1 x 18 = 18.00
  • Materials total: 370.00

Assumptions

  • Waste of 10 percent applied to mulch and rock only
  • Fabric and edging have no waste added
  • Quantities are rounded up to the whole yard or roll
  • Measurements come from the sketch and should be confirmed on site. Confirm unit sizes and availability with your supplier.

Questions for the owner

  • Should bed A be one row of Hakone grass, or more than one row across the 5 ft width? The count changes with the rows.
  • Diego Leach is listed as crew lead, but your note about the Subaru was unclear. Who is hauling the order, and in which vehicle? The takeoff does not depend on it, so I left it out.
  • Should fabric go under the rock only, or also under the mulch beds?

What it does

Takes the owner's site sketch notes, measurements, and plant choices and turns them into a clear list of plants and materials to order or load, with the math shown. Handles small beds and full multi-area yards.

Use it when: Use when a landscaping business needs to turn a site sketch, measurements, and a plant list into a plant and material takeoff, such as "do a takeoff from this sketch," "how much mulch and how many plants do I need," or "build my material list for this job."
