Student Level to Song and Method Book Picker
Takes what you know about a student (instrument, age, what they can play, what they like, how practice is going) and suggests a next method book step and a short list of songs.
Before and after
Maya, piano, age 9
Level summary: About 14 months in. Reads treble well, bass clef is shaky. Plays in C, G and F positions. Rhythm is solid through eighth note pairs and dotted half notes. Practices about 4 days a week for 15 minutes. Gets restless with slow material.
Book recommendation: Move on to Book 3 of Bright Steps, since she just finished Book 2 and her rhythm and treble reading are ready. Because her bass clef is still shaky, I would also use the Note Speller workbook for 5 minutes a day alongside it. That way Book 3 does not stall on the left hand. Check that Book 3 is on your shelf before the next lesson.
Song list
- A Frozen song from Sparkle Pops (pick one with a simple melody, if the book has one): Practices treble reading and eighth note pairs. Trouble spot: hand moves between positions. Check that the arrangement stays in C, G or F position, and if not, simplify it.
- An Encanto song, simplified or right hand only to start: Practices melody and a steady beat. Trouble spot: syncopation in some versions. Check the arrangement before assigning, and pick an easy version.
- A comfortable review song from Book 2 that she liked: Practices confidence and steady tempo. Trouble spot: none expected. Use it as a warm-up.
- A song in G position with a bass clef note or two in the left hand: Practices easing into the bass clef. Trouble spot: counting while reading two staves. Start hands separate.
- A song with a lively tempo and repeated patterns: Practices quick note recognition. Trouble spot: speeding up. Use a slow metronome setting first.
Stretch or later songs
- A full two-handed Frozen arrangement with changing hand positions: we recommend holding off until her bass clef is steadier, maybe in a month or two.
Recital idea for May: We recommend the simplified Encanto or Frozen piece from Sparkle Pops, since she is motivated by it. Start it early so she has time to polish it. Check the sheet music copyright and licensing if you plan to copy pages for the program or record the recital, and confirm the rules locally.
First week plan: Start with the Book 2 review song as a warm-up, then Book 3 page 1 (confirm the starting page in your copy). Spend 5 minutes a day on the Note Speller bass clef pages. Pick the recital song this week and play hands separate only.
Things to check
- Whether Book 3 is on the shelf
- Which Frozen and Encanto songs are in Sparkle Pops, and their positions and keys
- Whether the mom has a song preference for the recital
- Copyright rules for copies or recordings at the recital
What it does
Takes what you know about a student (instrument, age, what they can play, what they like, how practice is going) and suggests a next method book step and a short list of songs. Each pick comes with a plain reason so you can decide quickly.
Use it when: Use when a music teacher or music school owner needs to match a student's level to songs and method book choices, such as "what should I give this student next," "pick a book for my new beginner," "find songs for a kid who is stuck," or "what comes after Book 1."
