Good-Better-Best Repair and Replacement Options
Takes the plumber's notes on a water heater or fixture problem and the prices the owner gives, and writes up three clear options for the customer: a good, a better, and a best choice.
Before and after
Hi Whitney Dempsey,
Thank you for having Winterland Plumbing out to 3241 Thornland Rd in Fawnford. Here is what we found: your 50 gallon gas water heater, about 14 years old, is leaking from the bottom. The tank is rusted through, so it is leaking now and the unit needs to be replaced. We checked the relief valve and it is fine, and there was no gas smell.
Here are three options.
Option 1: Good
- Replace with a 40 gallon standard gas water heater, everything included: 1,850.00
- Haul away of the old unit: 85.00
- Total: 1,935.00
What you get: a straightforward replacement that stops the leak and gets hot water back.
Option 2: Better
- Replace with a 50 gallon gas water heater with a 9 year warranty: 2,400.00
- Haul away of the old unit: 85.00
- Total: 2,485.00
What you get: the same 50 gallon size you have now, plus a 9 year warranty.
Option 3: Best
- Replace with a 50 gallon tankless condensing unit, including new gas line sizing and venting: 4,900.00
- Haul away of the old unit: 85.00
- Total: 4,985.00
What you get: the most complete replacement, with a tankless condensing unit and the gas line and venting work included.
Also recommended: the shutoff valve under your kitchen sink is stuck, as you mentioned. We recommend replacing it with a new quarter turn valve for 140.00. This can be added to any option.
- Option 1 with valve: 2,075.00
- Option 2 with valve: 2,625.00
- Option 3 with valve: 5,125.00
We recommend Option 2, Better. The choice is yours, and we are happy to answer any questions before you decide. To approve an option, text or call us at 312-555-0122.
Questions for the owner
- What warranty applies to the labor on each option?
- Is the 40 gallon unit in Option 1 a different brand than the other options, and should the brand be named?
- How soon can the install be scheduled once approved?
