Before and after

BEFORE · what the owner typed
Input from the owner (Oakworth Pool Care): "new customer setup, Helen Ames, 4887 Lockworth Ave, Craneland, 402-555-0194. kidney shaped pool, about 30 long and 16 wide at the widest, I measured with tape. shallow end 3 ft, deep end 6 ft. has a round spa attached, 7 ft across, 3.5 ft deep all the way. I want 8 hour turnover on the pool and 30 min on the spa. pump label says 60 GPM. didnt check the filter. spa depth I just eyeballed with the stick, not sure."
AFTER · what the skill produced

New Customer Setup Sheet: Oakworth Pool Care

Customer: Helen Ames
Address: 4887 Lockworth Ave, Craneland
Phone: 402-555-0194

Main pool (kidney shape, rough figure)

  • Measurements: 30 ft long, 16 ft wide at the widest, taped
  • Surface area: 30 x 16 x 0.45 = 216 square feet
  • Average depth: (3 + 6) / 2 = 4.5 ft
  • Volume: 216 x 4.5 x 7.48 = 7,270.56 gallons, about 7,250 gallons

Spa (round)

  • Measurements: 7 ft across, 3.5 ft deep, depth estimated with a stick
  • Surface area: 7 x 7 x 0.7854 = 38.48 square feet
  • Volume: 38.48 x 3.5 x 7.48 = 1,007.4 gallons, about 1,000 gallons

Total water: about 8,250 gallons (7,250 pool + 1,000 spa)

Flow rate needed

  • Pool at an 8 hour turnover: 7,250 / 8 / 60 = 15.1, so 16 gallons per minute (960 gallons per hour)
  • Spa at a 30 minute turnover: 1,000 / 0.5 / 60 = 33.3, so 34 gallons per minute (2,040 gallons per hour)

Compared with your equipment
The pump label reads 60 GPM. That is above both the 16 GPM needed for the pool and the 34 GPM needed for the spa. The filter was not checked, so we cannot say yet whether it can handle that flow.

What this means
On the numbers given, the pump label is above what the pool and spa each need to hit your turnover targets. Real flow depends on plumbing, filter condition, and pump setup, so treat these as estimates. The kidney shape figure is rough. Please confirm any code, health department, or manufacturer figures locally or on the equipment paperwork.

Questions for the owner

  • What is the make, model, and flow rating of the filter?
  • Can you re-check the spa depth with a tape? It was only eyeballed with the stick.
  • Do you want to re-measure the kidney pool in a few more spots to tighten the rough figure?

What it does

Takes the measurements you wrote down at a new customer's pool and works out the approximate water volume, the flow rate needed to turn the water over in your target time, and a clean setup sheet for the customer file. It handles rectangle, round, oval, and kidney or freeform pools, including pools with a shallow end and a deep end.

Use it when: Use when a pool service needs to work out pool volume, turnover time, and the flow rate needed for a new customer setup, such as: figure out the gallons for this pool, how fast does the pump need to move water, or set up a new customer's pool numbers.
