Pool Water Test Results Explainer
Turns the readings from a pool water test into a clear message the pool owner can understand.
Before and after
Hi Jolene,
Thanks for having Finchbury Pool Care out today. Jorge Erickson tested your pool at 5581 Emberbury St, and the main findings are low chlorine, high pH, and high cyanuric acid. Here is each reading in plain English.
Your readings
- Free chlorine: 0.5 ppm (our target is 2 to 4 ppm). Below range. Chlorine is what keeps the water clean and clear, and low chlorine is likely part of why the pool looked cloudy.
- pH: 8.0 (our target is 7.4 to 7.6). Above range. pH is how acidic or basic the water is. When it runs high, chlorine works less well and the water can cloud or form scale.
- Total alkalinity: 140 ppm (our target is 80 to 120 ppm). Above range. Alkalinity helps hold pH steady, and high alkalinity can make pH tend to drift upward.
- Calcium hardness: 320 ppm (our target is 200 to 400 ppm). In range.
- Cyanuric acid: 85 ppm (our target is 30 to 50 ppm). Above range. Cyanuric acid shields chlorine from the sun, but when it is too high it can make the chlorine less effective.
What we did today
- Added 1 gallon of liquid chlorine
- Added 24 oz of muriatic acid
- Brushed the pool walls
Recommended now
- Cyanuric acid at 85 ppm. We recommend a partial drain and refill to bring it down. Please confirm any local drain and discharge rules before draining.
- Cracked skimmer basket. We recommend replacing it.
Checked and good
- Calcium hardness at 320 ppm is in range.
You asked if you can swim tonight. We can't answer that in a message, so please call us at 206-555-0182 and talk with Jorge or the office before you swim.
Questions for the owner
- What is the price for the skimmer basket and for the partial drain and refill?
- When should the follow-up test be scheduled?
What it does
Turns the readings from a pool water test into a clear message the pool owner can understand. It says what each reading is, what the tech found, and what the service did or recommends, using only the information the tech provides.
Use it when: Use when a pool service needs to turn water test readings into a plain English explanation for the pool owner, such as "explain these water test results," "write up the pool test for the customer," or "what do these chemical numbers mean."
