Turns your roof measurements and pitch into a clear material list with the math shown.
Before and after
Roof Material Takeoff
Cloverleigh Roofing
Customer: Alma Wagner, 5515 Blueleigh St, Grayford
Measured by: Andre Yates (ground and aerial)
Office callback number: 312-555-0128
Measurements (flat footprint)
- Main house: 2 planes, each 40 ft long x 15 ft run, pitch 6/12. Footprint 2 x 600 = 1,200 sq ft.
- Garage: 2 planes, each 22 ft long x 11 ft run, pitch 4/12. Footprint 2 x 242 = 484 sq ft.
Slope factors
- 6/12: square root of (36 + 144) = 13.416, divided by 12 = 1.118
- 4/12: square root of (16 + 144) = 12.649, divided by 12 = 1.054
Roof surface area
- Main house: 1,200 x 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft = 13.42 squares
- Garage: 484 x 1.054 = 510.1 sq ft = 5.10 squares
- Total: 1,851.7 sq ft = 18.52 squares
With 10% waste
1,851.7 x 1.10 = 2,036.9 sq ft = 20.37 squares
Material list
- Shingles: 20.37 squares x 3 bundles = 61.1, so 62 bundles
- Underlayment: 20.37 squares / 10 squares per roll = 2.04, so 3 rolls
- Ridge cap: ridge 40 + 22 = 62 ft / 20 ft per bundle = 3.1, so 4 bundles
- Starter: eaves (2 x 40) + (2 x 22) = 124 ft / 100 ft per bundle = 1.24, so 2 bundles
- Drip edge:
- Eaves: 124 ft
- Rakes, main house: 4 edges x (15 x 1.118 = 16.77 ft) = 67.1 ft
- Rakes, garage: 4 edges x (11 x 1.054 = 11.59 ft) = 46.4 ft
- Total: 124 + 67.1 + 46.4 = 237.5 ft / 10 ft per piece = 23.75, so 24 pieces
- Plumbing vents to flash: 3
Assumptions used
- Measurements are flat footprint numbers, converted with the slope factors above
- Waste of 10% applied to shingles and underlayment
- Both roofs are plain gables with no hips or valleys
- Rake edges are 4 per building, measured along the slope
Questions for the owner
- How many layers are on the roof now, and is any tear-off disposal needed?
- Do you want fasteners, sealant, or other accessories added to this list, and at what quantities?
- Should the waste percentage also apply to ridge cap, starter, and drip edge? It was applied only to shingles and underlayment.
- Is the decking condition known, or should this be checked on site before the order is placed?
- Do you want prices added? Send me your unit costs and I will total them.
What it does
Turns your roof measurements and pitch into a clear material list with the math shown. It covers shingles, ridge cap, starter, underlayment, drip edge, and counted items like vent flashings, and it works for one plane or a roof with several sections.
Use it when: Use when a roofing contractor needs a material list from roof measurements and pitch, such as "do a takeoff," "how many bundles do I need," "figure the squares," or "material list from these measurements."
