Smog Result, Next Steps, and Retest Reminder
Turns a smog test result and the rules you give it into a clear message for the customer.
Before and after
Message 1 of 2: Joan Wheeler, 2010 Chevrolet Impala, green
Hi Joan, this is Jill Waters at Wheatdale Smog Check. Your Impala did not pass its smog check on March 4.
What failed: the nitrogen oxide reading (NOx) was high at the 2,500 rpm test. NOx is a gas your engine makes when it runs hot, and the car's emissions parts normally keep it low. The hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide readings were fine, and the visual inspection was fine.
What we recommend: our technician recommends having the EGR system and the catalytic converter looked at. The EGR system helps control NOx, and the catalytic converter cleans the exhaust.
Retest: if you bring the car back here, the retest is free for 30 days after the fail. That window ends April 3. After that, the retest is the full price of $59.
Your registration date: you told us your registration runs out March 28. That comes before April 3, so we recommend finishing repairs and the retest before March 28.
We are at 1451 Swandale Ave, Wheatbury. Call 234-555-0112 or text 234-555-0113 with questions.
Reminder text to send March 23 (5 days before March 28):
"Hi Joan, this is Wheatdale Smog Check. Your registration is due March 28, so text us at 234-555-0113 to book your retest."
Message 2 of 2: Joel Wong, 2010 Nissan Sentra, white
Hi Joel, this is Jill Waters at Wheatdale Smog Check. Your Sentra passed its smog check today. We sent your certificate to the state electronically. You told us your registration is due April 12. Questions? Call 234-555-0112 or text 234-555-0113.
Questions for the owner
- What do you want to tell Joan about repair costs, or should the message stay silent on that?
- Does the state allow any extension or temporary permit if repairs run past March 28? Please confirm locally before telling her anything.
- Do you want to tell Joel when his next smog check is due? I did not include it because no rule was provided.
- Please confirm the retest terms and the state rules locally before sending.
What it does
Turns a smog test result and the rules you give it into a clear message for the customer. It covers what happened, what to do next, the retest deadline, and a short reminder text to send later.
Use it when: Use when a smog check shop needs to write the customer message after a test result, covering a pass or fail, the shop's retest terms, the registration deadline, and a retest reminder. Owners might say: write up this fail for the customer, remind them about their retest, explain what happens next after a smog fail.
