Before and after
Panel Layout Notes
Job: Matilda Yates, 5711 Rushleigh Rd, Quarryford
Prepared for: Mehdi Barnes, crew lead, Springleigh Solar (office 312-555-0152)
Panel size used: 5.6 ft by 3.4 ft
Customer goal: 12 panels, none visible from the street (street side is the west face)
South face
- Material and condition: composition shingle, about 15 years old per our visit. A couple of curled shingles near the left edge.
- Size: 32 ft wide by 14 ft up the slope
- Pitch: about 6/12, estimated at the visit, not measured
- Obstructions: plumbing vent about midway up on the left, plumbing vent near the ridge on the right
- Shading: none reported
- Layout note (rough fit, not a final design): With panels set portrait, each panel is 3.4 ft wide and 5.6 ft tall. Across 32 ft, 9 panels would span 30.6 ft. Up 14 ft, 2 rows would use 11.2 ft. That is a possible grid of 9 by 2 = 18 panels before setbacks and the two vents are taken out. The vents may reduce this, and setbacks are still to be confirmed. This face can likely hold the 12 requested panels, pending the confirmations below.
West face
- Material and condition: same shingle as the south face
- Size: 24 ft wide by 14 ft up the slope
- Obstructions: brick chimney at the bottom right corner
- Shading: large oak tree on the west side, shades the face from about 3pm in summer per the customer
- Customer wish: this is the street side, and she does not want panels visible from the street
- Layout note (rough fit, not a final design): With panels set portrait, each panel is 3.4 ft wide and 5.6 ft tall. Across 24 ft, 7 panels would span 23.8 ft. Up 14 ft, 2 rows would use 11.2 ft. That is a possible grid of 7 by 2 = 14 panels before setbacks and the chimney are taken out. The chimney may reduce this, and setbacks are still to be confirmed. This is the street side, and the customer does not want panels visible from the street, and the oak tree shades the face from about 3pm in summer. Because of those two points, we do not recommend using this face unless the customer changes her wish.
Garage roof (east face)
- Customer does not want panels here. No layout done.
Equipment and conduit notes
- Electrical panel: north wall of the garage
- Inverter: garage wall next to the electrical panel
- Roof-to-equipment route: not described yet
Concerns for the crew lead
- Curled shingles near the left edge of the south face. We recommend inspecting these and the surrounding roof before install, and repairing them as needed.
To confirm locally before final design
- Roof edge and ridge setbacks, and fire access pathways, with the building department and fire authority
- Roof structure and load, with a licensed engineer
- Electrical design, with a licensed electrician
Questions for the owner
- Is the 6/12 pitch confirmed by measurement?
- What is the planned route for conduit from the south face to the garage wall?
- Which panels will be used for the final design, and does the 5.6 ft by 3.4 ft size match?
- Where exactly do the shingles curl, and how far across the south face does it extend?
- How much of the south face is clear of shade through the day?
What it does
Turns roof photos, rough measurements, and site visit notes into organized panel layout notes that a designer, engineer, or install crew can work from. It records what is visible and what still needs to be confirmed, and it never guesses at measurements.
Use it when: Use when a solar installer or salesperson needs to turn roof photos and site notes into panel layout notes for a designer or crew, such as: roof photo to layout notes, write up this roof, what fits on this roof, or prep a layout from these pictures.
