Cover-up and Rework Suitability Screening
Takes a customer's cover-up or rework inquiry and the artist's notes about the existing tattoo, and produces a screening summary the shop can use to decide whether to book a consult, which artist fits, and what to tell the customer.
Before and after
Screening summary: Brandon Bishop
Request: Brandon Bishop wants to cover an old tribal band on his right upper arm with a koi fish and water in orange and blue.
What Brenda noted about the existing tattoo
- Solid black band, about 4 inches tall, wrapping the upper arm
- About 15 years old
- Dense black with the edges faded to a greenish tone
- A little blowout on the bottom edge
- No scarring or raised areas
Group: Consult needed to decide
Why
- The band is dense, solid black and wraps the arm, so the new design will likely need to be bigger and darker than the band to work.
- The blowout on the bottom edge is something Brenda needs to see in person to plan around.
- Brandon wants orange and blue. Light colors over dense black are a concern we want Brenda to look at in person before promising how the colors will read.
- Brandon sent two photos, but photos alone are not enough for us to decide.
Suggested artist: Brenda Brady, who does cover-ups and has openings in a few weeks. Bryce Case focuses on fine line and does not do cover-ups, so we do not recommend him for this one.
Message to Brandon
Hi Brandon, thanks for reaching out to Laurelmere Tattoo Studio. We got your photos and we would like to have Brenda Brady see your arm in person. A cover-up is usually larger and darker than the tattoo it covers, so the koi design may need to be adjusted in size and color to work over your band. We can't promise the band will be completely hidden. Brenda will decide what is possible at the consult, once she can see your skin. The consult is free, and the deposit is $50, which goes toward the tattoo. To book, call us at 312-555-0176.
Next step: Book a consult with Brenda Brady.
Questions for the owner
- Do you want a specific consult date or time offered to Brandon?
- Should the message mention pricing, or wait until after the consult?
What it does
Takes a customer's cover-up or rework inquiry and the artist's notes about the existing tattoo, and produces a screening summary the shop can use to decide whether to book a consult, which artist fits, and what to tell the customer. It does not make the final call. The artist does.
Use it when: Use when a tattoo shop needs to screen a cover-up or rework request before booking, such as: "can we cover this up," "look at this old tattoo inquiry," "screen this cover-up," or "is this a rework or a cover-up job."
